The Bike Stops Here was part of an ongoing effort to weave art into the fabric of our urban infrastructure. With the rapid growth of bicycling in Salt Lake City and the desire to encourage more people to choose cycling as a transportation option. So the Salt Lake Art Design Board asked for artists to create bike racks which enhanced Salt Lake City’s image as a cultural destination and bicycle friendly city, as well as to promote green and healthy lifestyles.

Torsion examined of the process through which complex patterns develop from smaller and simpler parts. The project used the rotation of a simple unit, a 2”x2” steel tube, arrayed into a spiral to create the helix form. The helix naturally creates spaces that are functional for bike storage.
