The Bike Stops Here was part of an ongoing effort to weave art into the fabric of downtown Salt Lake City’s urban infrastructure. With the rapid growth of bicycling in Salt Lake City and the desire to encourage more people to choose cycling as a transportation option, the Salt Lake Art Arts Council asked for artists to create bike racks which enhanced Salt Lake City’s image as a cultural destination and bicycle friendly city, as well as to promote green and healthy lifestyles.

Anthocyanin is a series of six bike racks, whose design is an abstraction of the outline of two maple leaves. The design is based off the leaves of the Big Tooth Maple, a plant native to Utah which turns a bright red in the fall. The bright red color comes for the Anthocyanin being synthesized in the leaves after the green chlorophyll in the leaves begins to breakdown.

Anthocyanin’s form was meant to remind users and viewers of nature in an urban environment  and promote the sustainable aspect of biking. It was made from 2”x2” Steel Tubing and powder coated in the a bright red to mimic the color of the Big Tooth Maple Leaf in the Fall. Each bike rack is 36”x36”x12”, and are arrayed perpendicular to 300 South in front of Squatters in downtown Salt Lake City.
