7’x9’x2’
Salt Lake City, Utah | 2016

Originally designed for a statewide call-for-entries, Artists of Utah’s Board of Directors selected Moor-ish Gate to be one of the pieces in the 35x35 Exhibit. A show which highlights thirty-five Utah artists under the age of thirty-five years. Hosted by the Salt Lake City Arts Council’s Finch Lane Gallery, this show, which comes around every 3 1/2 years, takes a look at the range of styles, themes and mediums being explored by this next generation of local artists.

Moor-ish Gate was an examination of historic Islamic patterns and forms, simplified and adapted to create a more modern take. The panels, tabs, and interior structural panels were laser cut from aluminum, polished to give it a dull reflective sheen.  It was designed to allow for light to filter through the arch’s panels, casting the delicate patterns onto the surrounding space. A steel frame is hidden behind the panelling to give the form some rigidity as well as give the base weight.
