The Flying Objects public art project that began ten years ago as a way to weave art into the fabric of Salt Lake City’s downtown. Since its inception, five iterations of Flying Objects have been completed. Mandala Lantern is part of Flying Objects 5.0, the fifth and final installment in the series, and is one of 18 permanent pieces in Downtown Salt Lake.
The Mandala Lantern is an elevated cube which lights up at night. Intricately cut mandalas on each side are designed to cast interesting shadows onto the surrounding street. Lit up by a solar powered light at the center of the cube, it is housed in a smaller multi-colored acrylic box creating a blue to green gradient of of light. Built from aluminum sheets bolted to a steel frame, the box is a light grey and the frame is black to create a contrast between the muted box and the color of the projections.
