Located in Long Beach Rowing Olympic Stadium, the project is surrounded by wildlife. This led to research of local avian respiration, which is defined by an interaction of two systems during breathing, a flexible member, air sacs, and the structure that contains it, the skeleton. A several groups and activities interact and overlap and therefore must be separated. The circulation path divides them, creating a series of programmable spaces and becomes a structural system of concrete columns which support the building’s screens and façade. Also tying in with the idea of respiration was the extensive use of natural ventilation by including in the design heat stacks, passive oriented window placement, and open space planning. Intertwining the ventilation with the structure, the heat stacks act as structural pillar from which the rest of the structure radiates and eventually merges with the ramps.
